Do CGM Sensors Expire? What the Date on the Box Actually Means

Quick answer: Yes. Every CGM sensor box carries a printed expiration date, typically 12 to 18 months from manufacture. To sell supplies, the box has to clear a cutoff that depends on the product: we buy boxes with at least 9 months left before expiry (6 or 7 months for FreeStyle Libre). The further out the date, the more the box pays: a Dexcom G7 10-Day box is worth $65 or $50 depending on nothing but that date.
Where to find the expiration date
It's printed on the outside of the box, so you never need to open anything. Look for a date beside the hourglass symbol, usually formatted as YYYY-MM-DD or MM/YYYY. On Dexcom boxes it sits on the side panel next to the REF code. On Omnipod and Libre packaging it's on the printed label panel.
If the box shows only a month and year, treat it as the end of that month.
What the date actually means
It's the manufacturer's guarantee window for the sensor's chemistry and adhesive, not a cliff where the device stops working at midnight. Sensor accuracy depends on an enzyme layer that degrades over time, and manufacturers set the date where they can still stand behind readings.
What it means for selling is simpler and stricter: a box past our cutoff can't be purchased. There's no judgment call involved.

The tiers that decide your payout
This is the part most people don't expect. The same sealed box pays very different amounts based only on how much shelf life is left.

A G7 10-Day box loses 23% of its value crossing from the top tier to the bottom. That's not a penalty; it's what happens as the useful life runs out. Every tier for every product is in our 2026 price list.
The waiting mistake
The most expensive thing you can do with unused supplies is nothing. Boxes found in spring and sold in autumn have often dropped a tier, or fallen past our cutoff entirely. If you know you won't use them, the value is highest today and lower every month after.
Can you sell expired CGM sensors?
No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. We buy only sealed supplies with real shelf life remaining. If your boxes are already past the date, selling isn't an option. Check whether a local clinic or nonprofit wants them for training purposes, or dispose of the electronics responsibly.
Does storage affect it?
Yes, though it doesn't change the printed date. Sensors should be stored at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, and away from a hot garage or a freezing car. A box stored properly is what everyone assumes; a box that spent a summer in an attic is a different item. Keep them somewhere climate-stable while you decide what to do.

They may still function, but the manufacturer no longer guarantees accuracy, and they can't be bought or resold. For a device that informs insulin decisions, that guarantee is the point.
